Abstract:Objectives To measure the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC), post antibiotic effect (PAE) and post antibiotic subMIC effect (PASME) of allicin against methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Candida albicans in vitro. Methods MIC were detected by broth macrodilution method. The numbers of CFU on plates were counted, and the growth curves of bacteria were drawn according to CFU counts. PAE and PASME were calculated with the curves. Results The MIC of MRSA and Candida albicans against allicin was 2.0 and 0.5 mg/L, respectively. The PASME of allicin against MRSA (at 0.3, 0.2, 0.1 times of MIC) was 0.07, 0.11 and 0.02 h respectively, and the PASME of allicin against Candida albicans (at 0.3, 0.2, 0.1 times of MIC) was 1.36, 1.61, 0.17 h respectively. Conclusions Allicin showed good efficacy and positive PAE and PASME to MRSA and Candida albicans, and the results may be useful for clinical application of allicin.
